Meridian, Idaho Community Profile

January 4, 2007

The City of Meridian boasted barely 30,000 population when I arrived on the scene September 1, 2000.

There were working farms everywhere I drove within a mile of downtown Meridian, and the old creamery building with its magnificent, towering smokestack presided over downtown alongside the old grain elevator next to the railroad tracks.

Six short years later, Meridian’s population approaches 65,000 and the downtown area is about to undergo a massive revitalization and redevelopment effort with a new City Hall complex on the site of the old creamery. Other major commercial developments are planned for the downtown area too.

Meridian is home to many thriving planned communities, several new city parks, and more schools under construction than I can even count ~ compliments of a burgeoning local economy and healthy growth.

Although home prices have risen substantially in recent years, homes in Meridian are a bargain when compared to other similar communities around the country. You can still find a nice, smaller home starting around $150,000. Homes in beautiful planned communities with lushly-landscaped common areas are available for $250,000 and up.

Millions of square feet of new retail space are either opening up or under construction throughout Meridian, including a new shopping mall on Eagle Road anchored by Kohl’s. The new Lowe’s Home Center opened a few months ago, Carraba’s Italian Restaurant opened its first store West of the Mississippi recently, and other new national restaurants are rumored to be checking out our area for future stores.
